I'm a 50 - something professional woman and aspire to be stylish! I have been wondering if a capsule wardrobe might help me. I would love to simplify my morning "What to wear" dilemma and save myself some time and faff. I want to feel comfortable but look well put together. I have lost some confidence over the years and I think shaking up my wardrobe might help me rediscover my mojo. Where do I start? Thank you!

You're not alone! I see so many women who have lost their style mojo in their 50s.
I love a Capsule Wardrobe! Anything that simplifies choice is good for me.
In my experience, what each of us needs varies according to our body shape, personality and lifestyle. Planning is the key, a good capsule doesn't just happen!
Simple steps to take before you even set foot in the shops are:
Look at what you do with your time and what you need your clothes to do for you
Look objectively at your body shape and colouring to see what styles and shapes suit YOU
Pattern – most of us are quite cautious with patterns, so if you have patterned tops and bottoms, you are likely to limit the combinations you can make
Colour - working from one colour palette makes mixing and matching easier
Time of year - I tweak my wardrobe seasonally
Set a realistic budget to enable quality purchases - you want these items to last. Think cost per wear
You can have as many capsules as you like - work, home, gym, jewellery.....
An easy wardrobe I do regularly to show my clients is
Eight tops
Two jeans
Two trousers
Two skirts
Two dresses/jumpsuits
Two jackets
Five pairs of shoes/boots
One good coat
Plus a good bag, two belts plus jewellery and accessories
This gives over 700 combinations - not hugely different but you get the idea...
Here's a mini capsule I am using for a two--week demo
Check out your wardrobe first for what you already have and love! A capsule works best when you love the clothes and can't wait to wear them!
Hope that helps

Hi Katherine, I think we all have a wardrobe crisis when we reach our 50s, so when it comes to looking stylish a smaller more versatile wardrobe is a great approach. While it's tempting to be lured by the “pile it high; sell it cheap” approach of fast fashion, the emphasis should really ne on quality, versatility and longevity. The key lies in buying items that seamlessly transition across various occasions.
White Shirt: Timeless and adaptable, it’s suitable for both casual and formal settings. Pair it with jeans for a relaxed look or tuck it into tailored trousers or a pencil skirt for a polished appearance.
Wide-legged black trousers: A wardrobe staple, dress them down with a T-shirt and trainers or up with a blouse and chic kitten heels.
Blazer: A well-fitted blazer adds structure to any outfit. Combine it with jeans for a smart-casual vibe or layer over a dress for a sophisticated touch.
Little Black Dress: Timeless and universally flattering, an LBD is an absolute must-have because it can be accessorised in countless ways. Keep it simple with flats or elevate with heels and statement jewellery.
Neutral Colours - Black, White, Grey and Navy: A neutral palette allows for easy mixing and matching, maximising outfit combinations. Use them as a base and add pops of colour through accessories.
Quality Coat: A well-constructed coat is your investment piece that elevates your entire look. Go for a classic style that complements your wardrobe.
Classic Shoes: The shoes you choose can make or break an outfit so opt for versatile styles like riding boots, loafers or ballet pumps.
Tailor your capsule wardrobe to your lifestyle and take into consideration your job, preferences and daily activities. By focusing on these key items and maintaining a cohesive colour palette, making getting dressed is a breeze while ensuring a timeless and chic aesthetic. Have fun shopping!
